Legislative Session Action Update

Alyssa Aberle, Regulation and Practice Chair, "The past couple of weeks have been busy behind the scenes with the state's "Long Bill" (budget bill) being released. Obviously the state is in a financial shortfall and has to address the budget by cutting spending. One of the proposed cuts was to a program called Covering All Coloradoans which covers children and pregnant women. The proposal was to reduce the cap for dental services within this program to $750 per year. Obviously $750 won't go too far to address urgent needs for this population and dental services are one of the highest utilized services within this program.
CODHA has been working closely with our lobbyists at Meridian Public Affairs on how we can impact these decisions. MPA recommended that we submit testimony even though the committee members said it may not make a difference since funds have to be cut and they don't have much choice. CODHA Immediate Past President, Dani Ford , understands the intricacies of this program through her clinical role at Denver Health. Dani submitted testimony for a hearing on Monday, but the bill still passed in committee 7-3. HOWEVER...late last night we heard from our lobbyists that when the bill was heard on the House floor, an amendment was introduced (AND ADOPTED) to restore the dental benefit for this program. It still has several more steps before being finalized and a lot can still happen, but this was a HUGE WIN!
THIS is the power in numbers. THIS is the power of speaking up even when you think your voice is too small to be heard. THIS is the power of advocacy.
CODHA will continue showing up and speaking up! Thanks, Dani for your leadership and expertise!"
